Reading Specialist
Reading Specialist language instruction is given by Mrs. Carol Schawbe.
Kindergarten
Many students in Kindergarten are learning the proper sounds of, and names of letters. However, there are students who are beginning to read, or still others, who are reading on their own. The love of of reading and the joy of enjoying a good story is emphasized to these young students.
The Reading Specialist also provides the following support for the Kindergarten teacher and students:
- Reading Specialist instruction is provided to kindergarten students once a week, for one hour, each session.
- Lesson plans vary, but identifying students with delayed phonemic awareness (sounds and recognition of letters) is a primary focus throughout.
- Providing advanced readers instruction consisting of challenging practice and enrichment.
- Providing class-wide reading enrichment activities
- Providing teacher consultation and guidance for students with special reading needs.

Parent conferences
1st Grade
This is an exciting grade for young students as often children are able to read lists of words or short-leveled readers on their own. A reading assessment is given to all students at the start of the school year to ensure that those students who are struggling with sound recognition (of consonants) can be diagnosed in a timely fashion. The Gates McGinitie Reading Test, Level 1, is given to all first graders at the end of the year to document and track reading practice and provide direction for successful Grade 2 reading instruction.
The Reading Specialist also provides the following support for the Grade 1 teacher and students:
- Reading Specialist instruction is provided to 1st grade students four times a week, for 45 minutes per session.
- Small group instruction involves grouping varied-level readers together, while focusing on reading practice and skill mastery.
- Advanced readers are given more challenging practice and enrichment.
- Providing teacher consultation and guidance for students with special reading needs.
- Administering weekly or monthly reading assessments as well as reviewing student test scores.

2nd Grade
Second grade is traditionally an age where the majority of students learn to truly read. Conversely, It is also the time in a student's development when a reading specialist enjoys the most success turning reluctant readers into enthusiastic readers! The Gates-McGinitie Reading Tests, Level 2, are administered at the completion of Grade 2 in effort track students' reading progress and provide direction for successful Grade 3 reading instruction.
The Reading Specialist also provides the following support for the Grade 2 teacher and students:
- Reading Specialist instruction is provided to 2nd grade students four times a week.
- Instruction consists of small groups or individual student interaction.
- Providing teacher consultation and guidance for students with special reading needs.
- Administering weekly or monthly reading assessments as well as reviewing student test scores.

3rd Grade
Third grade Reading Specialist instruction prepares students for the more vigorous reading skills taught in fourth grade. A majority of third grade students are in the process of becoming individual readers. The Gates McGinitie Reading Tests, Level 3, are given to the students at the end of the year in effort track students' reading progress and provide direction for successful Grade 4 reading instruction.
The Reading Specialist also provides the following support for the Grade 3 teacher and students
- Small groups and individual instruction becomes smaller, individualized and select.
- A “co-teaching” approach is provided with the Third grade teacher. During class time, students with specific needs or those who require specific skill instruction are invited to work with the Reading Specialist individually at the classroom's private reading area.
