Luke Sarnecki, grade 7, won the Our Lady of Perpetual Help School competition of the 2010 National Geographic Bee and advances to the next level of competition, a written examination to determine state competitors. Grant Beck, Wesley Schrum, Kenneth Shotting, Laurel Glover, Ryan McGuire, Luke Sarnecki, Matthew Florenzo, Sean Hildreth, and Christina Smith each answered a number of competitive questions in the final round before the three finalists, Kenny, Ryan, and Luke squared off in the Championship Round.
The National Geographic Bee is a nationwide contest for schools in the United States. The Bee is a program of the National Geographic Society. With a first-place prize of a $25,000 college scholarship—plus other prizes—the Bee is designed to encourage the teaching and study of geography. Students from all 50 states, the U.S. territories, and the Department of Defense Dependents Schools are participating in the 2009 National Geographic Bee.
There are three levels of competition: school, state, and national. To compete for advancement from the school to the state level, the winning student in the school must take the written, multiple-choice Qualifying test.
As many as a hundred of the highest-scoring students in a state or territory advance to the state level. The first place winner from the state Bee advances to the national level.
Congratulations and Good Luck, Luke!!
