New Principal Announced

For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, oracle of the Lord,
plans for your welfare and not for woe, so as to give you a future of hope.
When you call me, and come and pray to me, I will listen to you.

Dear Our Lady of Perpetual Help School Families,

Graphic announcing Tracy Underwood as OLPH principal, 2021.Greetings in this Easter Season, full of hope and joy! It is hard to believe the 2020-21 school year is almost complete. As the year draws to a close, I am especially proud of the quality, faith-filled education our students continue to receive – a formational experience that did not succumb to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. This excellence may be attributed to wonderful leadership, dedicated and flexible teachers, the engagement of our parents and families, and the support of the wider community.

When Mr. Malone announced he would not return as principal of Our Lady of Perpetual Help School for the 2021-2022 school year, a Principal Search Committee sought to identify an experienced leader to continue our mission. The search committee received many qualified applicants and spent the last few months diligently assessing and evaluating each candidate to determine the best fit for our school community. My gratitude to this committee who reflected upon the mission and vision of our school, strengthened by the feedback you provided in the surveys completed by our faculty and staff, parents, and school board. After selecting the strongest candidates from many qualified educators who applied, our school superintendent Dr. Hargens and I then interviewed the finalists recommended by this committee.

As a result of those efforts, I am excited to announce the appointment of Mrs. Tracy Underwood as the next principal of Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, effective July 1, 2021.

Mrs. Underwood is a dedicated educator and administrator with extensive classroom experience, having taught in-person, hybrid, and virtually over the course of her career. Her experience teaching preschool, kindergarten, elementary, and middle school, as well as her time as an adjunct faculty member at Howard Community College, will bring a wealth of knowledge to the OLPH community.

She most recently served as the Assistant Principal at Resurrection-St. Paul School in Ellicott City. Prior leadership roles include tenure as Administrative Head for Columbia Academy and Principal of Columbia Academy Elementary School.

In her leadership roles, Mrs. Underwood led and supervised a diverse range of faculty and staff, training teachers in administration and developing policies and procedures to promote a secure learning environment. She organized professional development for school staff and designed programs to meet the academic and social needs of all students.

Mrs. Underwood is eager to learn the traditions of OLPH and continue the excellence of our school community. She is a good listener and has a passion to be available to all faculty and staff, parents and guardians, and the wider OLPH community. It is her hope that the educational experience at OLPH will bring joy to all students.

Mrs. Underwood holds a Master’s in Education from the Johns Hopkins University School of Supervision and Administration, and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from State University of New York at Plattsburgh, NY. Additionally, Mrs. Underwood possesses early childhood, elementary education, Administrator I, and Administrator II MSDE certifications.

We are grateful for all your prayers and insight and for the work of the Principal Search Committee. We are confident that with Mrs. Underwood’s leadership and your support, Our Lady of Perpetual Help School will continue to remain a beacon of learning and faith in Howard County. Thank you for your commitment to Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

Please keep Mrs. Underwood and her family in your prayers as she transitions into her new leadership role as our school principal.
